For those of us who have quite a bit, it’s going to take more than 30 days, especially if you have life obligations and can’t be too flexible with your time.

So for those who are more of the latter, use this plan to do a general decluttering which will still make a significant difference. By general declutter, I mean you don’t want to get into the nitty gritty and spend too much time on cleaning and organizing specific spaces perfectly. When you have a bit more time and flexibility go back, one space at a time, and get into all the little details!

Start by setting realistic goals. What do you want to achieve? A calmer bedroom? A more functional kitchen?

How much time can you commit? Aim for 30 - 60 minutes each day. If you can dedicate a bit more time, that’s great! But, keep it realistic so the process is rewarding, not stressful.

By the end of this challenge, you’ll have a clean, cozy space you’re excited to come home to. Let’s get started!

Understanding the Decluttering Process

Before diving into the challenge, it helps to understand a few key methods that make the decluttering process easier:

The 4-Box Method

The 4-box method is a simple and effective way to tackle the mess around your home. Grab four boxes or bins and label them as follows:

  • Sell: Valuable items you can sell online or at a garage sale

Add it to the donate, sell, or trash box. This method will help you stay focused on clearing the clutter without feeling overwhelmed.

The One-In, One-Out Rule

A simple yet powerful rule: For every new item that comes into your home, remove an old one. This helps you avoid accumulating clutter in the future.

The 12-Month Rule

If you haven’t used an item in the last twelve months, it most likely means that item no longer serves any purpose in your life and it’s time to say good-bye. This rule will help you make quick decisions to free up space.

Decluttering Your Home: A 30-Day Plan

The 30-day challenge can be modified if you have additional rooms or areas of your home. On some days, you may spend just 10 or 15 minutes on decluttering and on others it might take 30 minutes or more. If you find an area is taking longer than you’d like, remember that you don’t have to do it all in a day. Break up tasks into several days if you need to.

There most likely will be times it’ll be necessary. Some of us have way more clutter than others so it’s no big deal. Just take it in stride.

The plan is simply a guide to help you along, and modifiable to suite your needs. Spread this out into 40, 50, and even 60 days if it will keep you from feeling overwhelmed. There’s nothing that says you can’t.

There’s also nothing that says you can’t get your children or partner involved. It would be a great learning experience for everyone that can develop into great habits for all those involved.

Just remember that the goal of this decluttering plan is to actually implement the plan and make a difference in your environment and your well-being. If you need to modify it, recrute some help, or take additional time to finish it, so be it. Enjoy the process as you feel your environment open up, take breaks if needed, and don’t let it stress you out.

Day 1: Before you begin tackling any specific room there are two things you’ll need to do.

  • Take a stroll through your home, do a quick scan and toss anything that’s obvious trash: broken items, empty containers, junk mail, and anything you’ve been meaning to throw out. This initial sweep will give you a fresh start.

  • Label 4 boxes: Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash

  • Prepare the temporary staging area for each room where you’ll place your four boxes.

Week 1: The Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a peaceful retreat, not a dumping ground for clothes and clutter. Let’s tackle the closet first.

Day 2: Start with tops.

  • Take out all tops and sort them as you do. Keep the ones you love and still wear.

  • I’ve been known to tell myself I’ll lose a few pounds to fit into something I haven’t worn in awhile and I end up forgetting about it. If it doesn’t fit let it go. Return it if you still have tags.
